Zhangjiajie
Located in northwestern Hunan Province, China, Zhangjiajie is a world-famous natural wonder and a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. It is globally renowned for its unique quartz sandstone peaks—thousands of towering pillars piercing the clouds, which served as the inspiration for the floating "Hallelujah Mountains" in the movie *Avatar*. Beyond its surreal natural scenery, Zhangjiajie also boasts rich Tujia ethnic culture, thrilling adventures and fresh mountain air, making it a dream destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers around the world.
The core of Zhangjiajie’s beauty lies in Wulingyuan Scenic Area, which includes Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain and Yangjiajie. Yuanjiajie is a must-visit, where you can see the iconic "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain" (officially named Qiankun Pillar) and enjoy the stunning view of endless peaks from the viewing platforms. Tianzi Mountain offers breathtaking panoramic views of the "stone forest sea", especially at sunrise and sunset, with unique rock formations like the Imperial Brush Peak. Don’t miss the Golden Whip Stream, a 7.5-kilometer flat trail through a lush "natural oxygen bar", where you can walk along the crystal-clear stream and spot wild macaques.
For adventure lovers, Tianmen Mountain is an unmissable spot, known as "Heaven’s Gate Mountain". Its most famous feature is Tianmen Cave, the world’s tallest natural arch cave, standing 131.5 meters high, with 999 stone steps leading up to it. You can ride the Tianmen Mountain Cableway—one of the world’s longest alpine cable cars, spanning 7.455 kilometers and taking 30 minutes to reach the top, offering panoramic views of peaks and clouds along the way. The Glass Skywalk, clinging to the cliff at 1,430 meters above sea level, brings a heart-pounding experience of walking in the air.
Zhangjiajie is also a treasure trove of Tujia ethnic culture. You can visit Tujia folk villages, admire the exquisite Tujia brocade (Xilankapu), a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, and watch traditional folk performances like the Tujia Hand-Waving Dance. Don’t forget to taste local specialties: spicy Tujia Three-Pot Dish, refreshing kudzu root powder, and crispy sour radish, all full of the unique mountain flavor of Zhangjiajie.
Practical Travel Tips. The best time to visit Zhangjiajie is April to June and September to November, when the weather is mild, the visibility is good, and there are fewer crowds.
