Medical Guide for Foreigners in China

In recent years, China has become a popular destination for foreigners seeking medical treatment, thanks to its efficient services, high cost-effectiveness and advanced medical technology. For foreigners in need of medical care, China’s medical system offers a reliable choice that combines speed, quality and affordability.

China’s medical sector offers high-quality resources, professional technology and notably low costs—1/3 to 1/10 of those in Europe, America and Japan—with top-level treatment. This draws many foreigners. This guide covers the process, cost advantages and key tips for safe, economical medical services.

There are many successful cases of foreign patients receiving treatment in China. A Nigerian patient with a 26-year unhealed burn and secondary malignant tumor avoided amputation after personalized skin graft surgery in China, with lower medical costs than expected. A Spanish patient with sudden retinal detachment regained vision after emergency surgery within 12 hours, thanks to efficient services and superb medical skills.

Choosing Hospitals: All options have cost advantages.

1. International departments of public hospitals (e.g., Peking Union Medical College Hospital) cost

1/3 to 1/5 of their foreign counterparts.

2. High-end private hospitals cost 1/2 less than foreign ones and offer insurance direct settlement.

3. Pilot hospitals provide preferential, no-hidden-cost services.

Medical Process:

1. Appointment: Use hospital platforms (English available) to avoid queuing.

2. Registration: Pay 50-200 RMB (7-28 US dollars), the same as Chinese citizens.

3. Consultation: Doctors avoid unnecessary checks.

4. Examinations/Treatment: Gastroscopy and NMR cost 1/10 to 1/5 of foreign prices; hospitalization

is cheaper.

5. Payment: Use cash, cards or mobile payment; drugs cost 1/3 to 1/4 of foreign prices.

Payment & Insurance: There is no "foreigners price difference".

1. Self-payment: Affordable via cash, cards or mobile payment.

2. International insurance (e.g., Bupa, Allianz) offers direct settlement.

3. Legally employed foreigners and students can join Chinese medical insurance.

Example: Chemotherapy costs about 100,000 US dollars in the US; in China, it costs tens of thousands of RMB (even cheaper after reimbursement).

Services & Notes: International hospitals have multi-language teams to avoid extra costs; some offer accompaniment services. Obey public health laws (refusing quarantine bears legal liability). Call 120 for emergencies (e.g., stomachache: about 200 RMB in China vs. thousands of US dollars in the US).

China’s medical system is complete and advanced. Low costs do not mean low quality—there are experienced doctors, world-class equipment and high efficiency (13 days in China vs. months abroad). Total costs (including air tickets and accommodation) are lower than foreign medical fees. Wish you a quick recovery.
